No Editor given, possibly Coppewaith or Pollock. THE BRITISH DRAMA, A Collection of the Most Approved (Esteemed) Tragedies, Comedies, Operas & Farces (In the English Language). In Two Volumes. Philadelphia: J.J. Woodward. 1832. No indication of prior editions. Appears to be a first American Edition of a title published originally London: 1824. 2 Volumes: 8vo., I: Steel engraved frontispiece and Title page, i-iv, 809 pages; II: Steel engraved frontispiece and Title page, 816 pages. 3/4 contemporary calf, with gilt trim and gilt stamped titles with raised bands over marbleized boards. Both with extensive wear and rubbing to boards and leather (through to boards at all edges), titles obscured by rubbing; Vol. I: front cover almost entirely detached, front inside cover paper missing and perhaps one sheet of front end paper (1 sheet of front end paper, frontispiece, bastard title all strong and securely bound in); both with bookplates (Ex Libris. (private collection with previous owner’s name scratched away), no other indication of Ex Libris history. Scattered light foxing, some pencil notations in table of contents (authors are written in neatly). Collection of the critically acclaimed works (each complete) for the stage (critically acclaimed as of the date of this publication) composed for the most part in the eighteenth century as well as the first 2 decades of the 19th cent. The anthology features such pieces as continued to be in the repertory at such venues as Drury Lane and Covent Garden through the early 1820’s. Dramatis Personae and cast are in fact given for Drury Lane and Covent Garden performances 1814-1818 where available. Authors include: Ambrose Philips, Sir Richard Steele, Ben Jonson, Charles Macklin, William Congreve, George Lillo*, James Thomson, Henry Fielding, David Garrick*, Thomas Southern*, John Dryden, John Vanbrugh, R.B. Sheridan, John Gay, Samuel Foote, Edward Moore, and countless others presenting an anthology of the most notable dramas of the period. There is unfortunately no explication of the order in which the various pieces are here presented and more unfortunately no attribution for the copious remarks which preface each play.
