Antique photographic plate on board, ca. 1868, a commemorative of the British Crimean War victory, entitled "The Grand Naval Review of English Ships of War at Spithead, July 17th, 1867". 13 3/4" x 7 3/4" rigid paper board with printing in black and slightly rounded sides, 10 3/8" x 3" sepia photograph tipped in; below left corner of plate is 'Symonds Photo: Portsmouth' and at right corner 'Pixt: W.E. Atkins', meaning that this is a photograph of the painting (pinxt) by William Edward Atkins (1842-1910). Deaccessioned from The San Francisco Maritime Museum, and formerly of The Carnegie Museum collection, ca. 1898 (with Carnegie inventory number of 14288/11 to back). History: the Review was held for held for Abd-ul-Aziz, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, & his Viceroy of Egypt, Ismail of Egypt, with the host, Queen Victoria. New ships were the five-masted HMS Minotaur with her powerful broadside, & the graceful 14-knot ironclad sister-ships HMS Warrior & HMS Black Prince. 15 great wooden ships were also present. This was in effect a victory parade for the victors of the Crimean War, over the Russians. This item appears to be an official commemoration of the event, with a bold 'Regtd' mark below the title.
