Fascinating 19th century history of British Columbia , in the Canadian west, in the years 1847 to 1871; the time between the drawing of the international boundary and B.C.'s entry into Confederation. In those years, some of the most exciting episodes on the 'new frontier' occured , including the almost war over the San Juan Islands ; the arrival of the bride ship Tynemouth ; the rivalry between the twin colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia ; the building of the Collins Overland Telegraph ; the preparation for attacks on the colonists by Irish Fenians ; the administration of English law by Judge Begbie ; "The Overlanders of '62" cross from Canada ; the arrival of Viscount Milton and Dr. Cheadler ; the planning of the roads to the Interior by Governor Douglas ; Colonal Moody and his Royal Engineers arrival from Britain, and the Royal Marines from China ; missionaries doing their work ; the athoritarian Christian Indian village built by William Duncan at Metlakatla ; the discovery of coal in Nanaimo , and gold in the Queen Charlotte Islands , along the Fraser River and the Thompson River, and, in incredible quantities, the gold rush in the Cariboo ; the first 'independent' settler, eccentric Captain Grant ; the Christmas Indian race held at Takla lake; and much more. Photos include Gold Rush pioneers and towns , Cache Creek , Quesnelmouth , and more; camps , cabins, claims; some Indian portraits, including a Babine chief ; some of the boundary workers in the early days, and more. Author G.P.V. Akrigg was born in 1913 in Calgary, where his father was serving with the Royal North West Mounted Police. He became a professor at UBC , and wrote two previous books to this which were both published by Harvard University Press and his book on Shakespeare was selected by the New York Times as one of its ten best books of that year. His wife Helen was born in Prince Rupert; her father E.C. Manning was District Forester , and later had Manning Park named in his honor. She wrote her M.A. thesis on the Shuswap Lake district, where they lived, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1970. This book was a labor of love for them, and affords hours of enjoyment for the armchair traveller who dreams of the days of the frontier and gold rushes in Victorian times, when men were men and women were scarce and a fresh egg and a clean bed were literally worth their weight in gold.
