Descripción

Lepsius (23 December 1810 - 10 July 1884) was a pioneering Prussian Egyptologist and linguist and pioneer of modern archaeology. As a founder of scientific archaeology Lepsius undertook the enormous project of cataloging Egyptian artifacts and worked to establish a chronology for Egyptian history. This work describes Lepsius' scientific expedition of 1843 to 1845, under the patronage of Frederick William IV of Prussia, to Egypt and the Sudan. Among other discoveries, Lepsius found evidence of pyramids dating from about 3000 BC. He was the first to measure the Valley of the Kings; he made many casts of temple reliefs and inscriptions, supervised the preparation of many drawings, and secured papyri and antiquities to bring back to Germany. The Berlin Museum's Egyptian collection became one of the world's best under his direction. This expedition was the best equipped and most academically qualified group since Napoleon's expedition and military campaign; it was the first to study and record material from Egypt's Old Kingdom. The scope of his work was immense; Lepsius describes many sites which today have seriously deteriorated. 8vo, xii, 456pp Frontispiece, color lithograph of Berg Barkal, Lithographic plate, of inscription, and folding lithographic map. Bound in half marbled green cloth and marbled boards. Front outer hinge starting, otherwise very good condition. OCLC: 6621381. N° de ref. de la librería 23286
