Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, uncut, xiii +338 pp. Near-Fine, with light foxing (age darkened spotting) to endpapers and slight rubbing along edges; in a Good+, age darkened, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear that includes light chipping. Numerous illustrations from photographs, war posters, and facsimiles of letters and documents of historical interest. From dust jacket: This book will rank with the great historical works on the war. It tells the inside story of the U.S. Shipping Board and Emergency Fleet Corporation, and necessarily details vital facts in the activities of practically every branch of the naval, military, political, and economic strategyu of the Allies here and abroad. The book includes an absorbing account of Foch and ther Germans at Treves, the Spa and Brussels Conference, and gives some interesting examples of European diplomacy. Mr. Hurley relates events in the administration of Woodrow Wilson and the launching of his political career that have never before been published.A few of the gigantic problems overcome by the Shipping Board as described by Mr. Hurley include the conceiving and building of the fabricated steel ships; wooden, composite and concrete ships; the epic of Hog Island; operating the carrying fleet; supply of materials; recruiting, housing and transporting shipyard workers; making seamen out of landlubbers; protecting ships from submarines; convoying ships across the Atlantic, etc. In connection with the Shipping Board's great work, the book brings the reader in contact with the work and personalities of Wilson, Schwab, Edison, Ford, Colby, Hoover, Pershing, Gen. March, Lord Northcliffe, Geddes, Kerensky, House, Dawes, Lord Reading, Foch, Lloyd George, Clemenceau and others, with many of whom the author was in close contact.
