223 Pages. Signed by the author on the front endpaper. Tight square book with very minor wear to cover corners and edges. Interior text and illustration pages are flawless. Experience the sociological and historical transformation of Grants, New Mexico from a small rural western town to the thriving Uranium Capital of the World. This book is colorfully written by George Dannenbaum, the Mayor of Grants during it's Boomtown growth period and endeavors to express the broad scope of experiences of miners, natives and newcomers to Grants. Someone once said, George Dannenbaum is Grants! Perhaps he meant that both the community and the man had tumultuous origins, survived tough conditions and times, but evolved into a positive force embodying freedom and understanding in an environment of vast space, clear blue skies and plenty of fresh air. His research into the Grants uranium boom was extensive. He interviewed more than 100 uranium people, made easier by his warm, close relationship with the miners. No one has more complete and comprehensive knowledge of the significance of the Ambrosia Lake uranium boom! George Dannenbaum was born in his grandfather's home in west Grants, just east of the old white Arrow Garage still standing at the corner of Santa Fe and Wayne streets. Grandpa Simon Bibo was the second settler in Grants, having bought 160 acres of land from Jesus Blea for $50 in 1881. Married 48 years to Jennie Dannenbaum, he has six children and six grandchildren. He taught school in Corona, New Mexico, and at Grants High. After being forced out of the school system, he ran for mayor in 1952. He won, and the Dannenbaum Machine retained that post for eight years. He ran again and won for one more term in 1962. He was the Boomtown mayor and helped Grants overcome the obstacles presented by rapid growth. Contents in Seven Chapters: Setting and Background in Cibola County, Origin and History of Uranium, original Miners and Mining Stories, Life in Boomtown, Adventures in Uranium Deep Mining at Ambrosia, Miner and Mining, and Local Miner-Poet Ends the U Story Pie Town Diary. Size: 5 1/2" X 8 1/4". N° de ref. de la librería 17108
