This work originally appeared in 1946 in two volumes.Dover reissued this unabridged but corrected edition in 1980 in a single volume, but the binder of this copy has bound the book in two volumes. The binding is a competent amateur's job : the principal give-away lies in the gilding, where the spine lettering is a little uneven,& in the gilt rulings which are not completely parallel to the blindstamped rulings or to the edges of the boards. All edges are stained to match the calf,& all endpapers are handsomely marbled. What the binder has got right is the satisfactorily smooth opening & closing of all covers. There is a tiny patch of chafing on one corner,& there are light indentations on all boards. Sinopsis: Mammoth volume by one of the world's foremost practitioners. Both historical survey emphasizing decorated bindings, and eminently practical guide to hand bookbinding. 93 plates, 242 figures.
