8vo., First Paperback Edition, with illustrated title and numerous illustrations (several full-page) in the text, fore-edges moderately spotted; original pictorial wrappers (by Minton), covers mildly spotted as usual else a very good, bright, firm copy. FIRST PAPERBACK EDITION OF DAVID'S FIRST BOOK, AND THE FIRST OF THE THREE VOLUMES THAT WOULD CHANGE ENGLISH COOKING FOR EVER. Lehmann's first edition was a small print run, in relative terms expensive and tended to appeal primarily to the converted. It was the work's appearance in this handy form, badged as a familiar and undaunting Penguin which really led to popular appeal. It was also the work that combined for the first time David's highly characteristic style with Minton's wonderfully complementary illustrations. In many ways, then, this is the most influential edition of arguably the most influential English cookery book of the twentieth century. Certainly it was followed (and is still followed) by countless reprints (alas, without Minton) which must have amply rewarded Penguin for its initial foresight. N° de ref. de la librería 22142
