THIS BOOK-COLLECTING GAME A. Edward Newman. Little, Brown & Company, Boston. 1928 First edition SIGNED COPY 412pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is quarter bound in blue linen with blind banding ana paper title label to the spine. The boards are blue paper covered with some mild bumping but otherwise fine. There is a small neat signature to the front paste down. Gilt top page edges other sides uncut. There is some curious damage to the outer edge of the half itle which could be a paper imperfection but apart from this the text block is otherwise fine, tight and bright. A dustwrapper is not called for. This copy has the bold inscription on the f.e.p. "Book Collecting! it's a great game and it's only begun A.Edward Newton 20 May 1929" with no other dedication. This First edition includes the implication on pp195 that Messers Quaritch may at some time have been party to an auction 'knockout'. This was removed from the later English edition. Alfred Edward Newton (1864—1940) was an American author, publisher, and avid book collector. He is best known for his books Amenities of Book Collecting (1918) which sold over 25,000 copies and This Book-Hunting Game (1928). At the time of his death, it was estimated that he had approximately 10,000 books in his collection, focusing on English and American literary works, the major part of which were auctioned by Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York in April, May, and October 1941. Highlights of the sale included the autograph manuscripts of Thomas Hardy's novel Far From the Madding Crowd and Charles Lamb's essay Dream Children. However, the fall in rare book prices steadily through the Great Depression meant that many sold lots brought only a fraction of prices they would have realized at the time of the Jerome Kern sale in 1929. The three volume Newton sale catalogue remains a useful reference for literature collectors. Ref M1 Size: 412pp. N° de ref. de la librería 007418
