Acerca de

This is another book in the Halsgrove Parish History series, reminding us of the people and events that have made our communities what they are today - celebrating the past and providing a stepping stone to the future. The photographs in this unique volume, many of them previously unpublished, are a vital record of the history and inhabitants of this ancient settlement brought together from across the community. The name Bridport used to bring a shudder to many an unruly sailor's spine in the days when to be 'stabbed by a Bridport dagger' - was to be hanged - for it was this historic and picturesque town which served as the rope-making centre for the Royal Navy. Bridport also made contributions out of all proportion to its size to fighting the conflicts of the twentieth century. The sea flows in and out of Bridport's history, from the earliest attempts at making an anchorage to J.M.W. Turner's painting of one of its shipwrecks, and the hurricanes of recent memory.

The setting is also embraced in terms of its antiquity and scenery and developments have been held in check by a growing portfolio of National Trust and Woodland Trust properties which have preserved key parts of the nearby cliffs and countryside. Bridport remains as England in microcosm. All this, and much more, is detailed in this 160 page book, copiously illustrated throughout with over 200 historic photographs of the places and people who have made up the thriving community of Bridport and its surrounding parish.
