**NOT EX-LIBRARY**614 total pages of text, but over 200 full-page engraved portraits are not numbered and are thus not included in the page count so well over 800 pages in these two volumes. NOTE: These books were later divided and reprinted in a five volume, smaller, quarto-sized format, but this is the complete, unabridged edition in two volumes. Huge, very heavy books. A handsome, lovely set. The books have no significant flaws, show only very brief, occasional and extremely minor signs of use or age. With over 200 portraits on steel executed expressly for this work by the best American and English artists. Each portrait has its own protective tissue page, and each portrait is over a facsimile signature of the portrait's subject. Several hundred lengthy biographies on notable men from Ohio history, many accompanied by a full-page steel engraved portrait of the subject. The books stand a foot tall and are over 9 inches wide. Each is over 2 inches thick. Each is fully bound in two types of heavy-duty leather, one type covering the spine and the corners, another covering the front and rear boards. The spines have 5 raised bands, stamped gold lettering, and blind-stamped decorative devices, and the front boards are stamped with elaborately scripted gold lettering and decorative devices. All the exterior page edges are marbled and match the heavy-duty, marbled endpapers. This is an exceptionally handsome and elegant set of books, with true value as historical reference and original source-books given the tremendous amount of information they contain. The books are extremely clean, stain-free, square and perfectly straight, still exceptionally firm and tight in their bindings, no pages loose, missing or torn. The hinges in both books are sound and undamaged, corners unbumped. The gilt lettering and decorations are still clean and bright, look almost like new. There is an occasional small spot of rubbing or scuffing to the leather at the extremities, in the main at the corner tips and at and near the tops of the spines, but all leather is present and is not cracked from age or dryness. In fact, the leather is surprisingly fresh and very clean. There are some areas on the front boards of each book that have been age-faded, a bit lightened from exposure to the sun. Internally, the books are near flawless, the pages show very little toning from age, and there is no foxing whatsoever. Brief previous owner's inscription on one blank front endpaper of Volume II, but otherwise no writing, underlining or other such markings in the books. Taken as a whole, this is a surprisingly solid, neat, bright and fresh set of truly scarce books in collectible condition. N° de ref. de la librería 1130
