Partendo dalle grandi ondate migratorie e dal rapido inurbamento avvenuto durante gli anni '60, Owens ha iniziato la sua carriera documentato i raduni di Woodstock (la beat generation, i Rolling Stones ad Altamont) e i cortei pacifisti contro la guerra in Vietnam per diventare, già negli anni '70, il ritrattista ufficiale di quell'American way of life fatto di "neighborhood", steccati bianchi e piccole bandiere piantate in giardino. Questo volume raccoglie le immagini più rappresentative delle sue serie selezionate dall'autore stesso: la celebre "Suburbia" (1970-72); "Our kind of People" (1969-75); "Working (I do it for money)" (1975-77); "Leisure: Americans at play" (1973-80), "After Suburbia" (1975-77); "115 days. A Photographer journey across America" (2003); e l'ultima "New Suburbia" (2006-07). Nelle foto più recenti, a colori e in buona parte inedite, Owens racconta la naturale evoluzione dello scenario di Suburbia: cementificazione a perdita d'occhio e labirintici reticoli stradali in cui si svolge una quotidianità che sembra non concedere più nulla al sorriso e alla curiosità degli scatti effettuati nei precedenti decenni.
