Descripción

Thirty-eight issues of the tabloid format newspaper, successor to Muhammad Speaks, all with horizontal fold, paper toned, otherwise generally good to very good but for several issues crinkled or rather edgeworn. Most have color pictorial covers. Issues present are vol. 1, nos. 36, 40, 41; vol. 2 no. 6; vol. 3 nos. 2, 33-35, 37, 40, 43-45, 50, 52; vol. 4 nos. 1, 2, 4, 11, 23, 40; vol. 5 nos. 5, 9, 10, 12, 16, 18, 25, 34, 44; vol. 6 nos. 6, 14, 20; then under the title American Muslim Journal, vol. 8 nos. 2, 5, 29, 30, and as Muslim Journal, vol. 13, no. 9. Published by Elijah Muhammad's son and successor Warith Deen Muhammad, who transformed the Nation of Islam as it then existed towards the direction of orthodox Islam, abandoning tenets such as the deification of Wallace Fard Muhammad, mythology about white people being the result of an ancient scientific experiment, and Black supremacy and separatism in general. This led to tensions with Louis Farrakhan, who re-established the Nation of Islam under its original name and sued for ownership of major properties in Chicago. The term Bilalian comes from Bilal ibn Rabah, a slave of Ethiopian descent said to have been the first Black Muslim convert during the lifetime of the prophet Muhammad. The papers includes much social commentary (even a syndicated column by Ralph Nader), discussion of Islamic tenets, sermons by Warith Deen Muhammad, and news about the organization.
