24, [4], ccxciv pp. plus frontispiece portrait and 14 plates; [xxiv], 516 pp. plus 5 plates; [ii], liii, [3], 587, [1] pp.; large 4to, later quarter black straight-grained morocco, gilt spine titles, marbled paper sides, t.e.g.; some plates with tissue guards. A wide-margined copy (probably large paper), printed on thick paper. Volume 1 is in two parts, followed by volume 2, each with half-titles and a separate title page. During the relatively short period from 1814 to 1827, three noblemen, Earl Spencer, the Duke of Buckingham, and the Duke of Sussex each issued multi-volume, elaborate descriptive catalogues of the vast and important collections in their libraries. Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex (1773-1843), sixth son of George III and Queen Charlotte, had formed a library consisting of more than 50,000 volumes of books and manuscripts, almost a quarter of which were theological in nature. Covering only a portion of the Duke's library, it was catalogued by his librarian, Thomas J. Pettigrew. The library was dispersed at auction in 1844 and 1845, following his death. Very good copy; some of the plates show mild offsetting onto their facing page; some widely scattered faint foxing spots (mostly adjacent to the plates); short closed tear to the foredge of several leaves in vol. 2; some tips a touch rubbed.
