Maurice Shadbolt's autobiography/family history was much acclaimed when first published in 1993, winning as much acclaim as had his earlier novels and short stories. While his own life as author, traveller and man of many parts alone was intensely interesting, by skillfully weaving in the family history with its characters as engrossing and varied as any in his works of fiction, he produced a masterpiece. These began with his Shadbolt ancestor sentenced to transportation to the Australian penal colony and surviving the hell-hole on Norfolk Island. This was Benjamin who later became a prominant NZ citizen, businessman and embraced the church. The characters that followed from his family included a boxer, a sawmiller given to law suites, a nursing sister e who served in the Spanish Civil War. His telling of their story, and his own, is laced with anecdotes, humour, drama and incidents galore. A great book from a distinguished NZ literary figure. This seconds revised and corrected edition published in card covers in 1994. 313 pages, 18 b/w photos centrally located. Colour art front cover by Jeff fisher VG+, ditto text block, no inscriptions.
