Hand-tinted photographs and simple, poetic text recreate the fun of a beach trip. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 3 A myriad of photos and a minimal text (``Some build a castle, Some dig in the sand. Some have hot dogs, Some ice cream'') celebrate the manifold joys of the summer shore. Just about every sandy or salty activity (except, curiously enough, swimming) is happily catalogued for anticipatory or nostalgic delight. The adult's poignant memory of childhood holidays by the sea is deliberately evoked by the photos. Robbins takes black-and-white pictures and hand-colors them with watercolor dyes, producing those slightly washed-out, unnatural and fragile tints that can still be found in family photo-albums from the '40s. Landlocked libraries will surely want to stake out this bit of beach, but even sea-begirt readers will be beguiled. Although in most of the book the ocean is only a backdrop for the humans, in the evocative final double-page spread it comes into its own. Patricia Dooley, formerly at Drexel University, Philadelphia
