462, (8) pages; This particular example of Mavor's popular text book is distinguished by it's binding. Sometime in the 19th century the original calf binding was enveloped in plain sheepskin with just a small square cut out at the spine to reveal the red leather spine label with gilt lettering. Even the sheepskin is a bit rubbed and worn, but it has well served its purpose of maintaining the integrity of this book, though the blank endpapers are missing, the text block is intact. Illustrated frontispiece and four full page plates, each printed with six portraits of notable Brits. Frontispiece torn at outer margin, ink damage to four of the portraits on plate 2 and one portrait cut out of of the six portraits on Plate 3. containing portraits of famous Britons—twenty-four portraits in all, including Geoffrey Chaucer, Thomas More, William Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson, Captain Cook, John Locke, Isaac Newton, John Wickliff, Cardinal Wolsey, Francis Drake, Francis Bacon, William Harvey, John Milton, Edward Coke, Earl of Stratford, John Hampden, Admiral Blake William Fordyce Mavor (1758–1837) was an educator and a compiler of educational works. In 1775 he became an teaching assistant in Burford, Oxfordshire, and he subsequently taught a school at Woodstock. After instructing the children of the Duke of Marlborough in writing, he obtained a title for holy orders in 1781. Many of his educational books, especially ‘The English Spelling Book,’ passed through numerous editions trhough the early 19th century. N° de ref. de la librería 38606
