[10],394,[64] leaves. Folio (360 x 240 mm). Old vellum over boards. Maps and woodcuts (419 cuts, some quite large). Decorated initials, and head and tailpieces. Roman, italic and Hebrew letter. Prominent printer's device on title. Title leaf extensively remargined at gutter, small paper patch to spot of thinning on title leaf, ink inscription on free endsheet, contemporary ownership inscriptions, occasional spotting and tanning, modest soiling and shallow marginal tide-marks; leaves 3B1 - 3D6 of the terminal indices somewhat worn and soiled with marginal tide- marks, occasional remargined gutters, repairs, scattered spots and fraying at fore- margins; early ink inscription in lower margin of [4F1] and rare instances of other marginalia, vellum somewhat darkened and soiled, with early repair along lower edge of upper board and toe of spine; generally just a good copy. A profusely illustrated folio edition of the Louvain Bible, published by Guillaume Rouillé, the prominent humanist bookseller/publisher who established himself in Lyon ca 1543 after an apprenticeship in Venice. Ruoillé commissioned the designs for the woodcuts from Pierre Eskrich, the well- known illustrator, woodcutter, engraver, painter and mapmaker (ca 1520 to 1590). The illustrations were to be made in the vein of those made by Bernard Salomon for Jean de Tournes. The woodcuts first appeared in Rouillé's BIBLIA SACRA of 1562, and those for the Old Testament were published separately in 1564, accompanied by verses by Guillaume Guéroult. For this edition, Rouillé commissioned an entirely new series for the New Testament. While they have been customarily attributed to Eskrich, a case has been made that at least some of the cuts, based on initials in a few of the images, are by a "Jean Moni," whose career is otherwise undocumented. Like those for the Old Testament, these New Testament woodcuts were published separately in 1570 by Rouillé, accompanied by verses by Claude de Pontoux. Mortimer details the histories of both series in her discussion of those separate publications. MORTIMER (FRENCH) 92 & 93 (ref). N° de ref. de la librería WRCLIT 65586
