Descripción John Van Voorst, London, 1872. Half Leather. Estado de conservación: Near Fine. J. Wolf Ilustrador. First Edition. This copy, which comes in an exceptionally fine half-leather binding, has been bound-up with only three of the four tinted lithographs by Wolf. There is no sign that any plate has been removed, so one may assume that it must have been missing when the book was given its fine binding. One possibility is that the missing illustration was originally placed with a single section of four pages (pages 57 - 60) which somehow escaped being sewn in and thus remained loose. This has now been carefully tipped-in with conservation paste. The book consists of 171 pages plus the publisher's advertisement page. In addition to the three full-page plates, there are several attractive engravings in the text. The beautifully hand-tooled brown leather spine has five raised bands. Four of the spine compartments are decorated with gilt-stamped birds and ornamentation, while the other two compartments contain the author and title in gilt - the date is at the base of spine. The boards are covered with a red and gold marbled paper and the endpapers are matching. The top edge is gilt and there is a red marker ribbon. Slight scuffing at tail of spine and along bottom edges of the boards; also slight scuffing on the corners of the boards and just the odd scuff on the covers. There is a 19th century armorial bookplate on the front paste-down endpaper, with subsequent owner's name in ink added in 1944. Some fox spotting to prelim pages, end leaves and page edges. Despite detailed points noted, overall the attractive binding is in remarkably bright and clean condition for its age. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Nº de ref. de la librería 000995
