Descripción:

Two page autograph land claim on folded lined blue paper. A Land claim in the Union Township, Trinity (Humboldt) County in California dated February 10, 1853 (8 x 10 1/2 inch) and signed twice by Daivd Leeper (1832-1900). It is also signed by H.H. Janes, Justice of the Peace. Leeper was in California from February 1849 to 1854 prospecting around Redding Diggings, Hangtown, and the Trinity River and later lumbering near Eureka. He later wrote an account of his experiences in ARGONAUTS OF FORTY NINE (first edition done in 1894). The document deals with a 160 acre land claim one mile southeast of Eureka, California. Killed on July 30, 1864 at Burnside's mine. 1 page, 10 x 15.75 inches, partially printed, no place, 1863 -- a partially-printed pay voucher verifying that Dixon is entitled to compensation from January 1 1863 to March 31, 1863, for the sum of $305.69. This document is a transfer of land from a soldier who served in the Continental Army, completely in the hand of John Ray, in part: ".Know ye that Charles McKinney, private in the 2nd New York Regiment, commanded by Col. Phillip Van Cortlandt, in the service of the United States.for the consideration of the sum of eight pounds, New York Currency.transfers to Peter Hughes, for my service in the Army.during the war with Great Britain.the parcel granted [herein]." Evidently, Charles McKinney was selling land he received as a stipend for his services during the war, but could not afford to keep it. Peter Hughes is said to have acquired great wealth by buying such parcels at a pittance. Evenly toned with some weakness at the center fold; otherwise very good condition. Willets was a Revolutionary War Colonel who led his own regiment of New York troops; this document stated that his troops had not received forage or pay for over a month, in part: "This certifies that the field and staff officers of Col. Willets Regt. of New York State Troops intitled to forage have not received any forage from me or pay for the same." In this document, the parcel is ".laid out to Eboner Barker, ten acres and a half %u2013 and three rods of land, lying between Doon Hills.and the Shine River, bounded on the Northwest corner of Swamp Oak." A true attested copy signed by Committee Members: Steven Osgood, Ephram Foster, and Joseph Burney as surveyor.
