Henry Miller. Autograph letter, signed. Big Sur 1951. One 8.5x11" sheet. "Big Sur 6/12/51 Dear Doctor Adriani, I received the enclosed from publisher only the other day. He is paying me off - le salaud!** - by sending me (3) copies of the $120 edition*. Should get them soon now. But where to sell them? I would keep one for myself & try to sell the other two. Have you a suggestion - which bookseller would be likely to be interested? The other day Léger*** sent me a copy of his "Cirque" - a wonderful edition. That was the book I originally wrote "The Smile" for - but he didn't like it, so he wrote his own text. Incidentally, my "preface" to Rimbaud is very short - they wanted it thus - but in my own hand, in French. Greetings! Henry Miller" Notes: *This would have been "The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder", published by Greenwood Press, San Francisco, 1955. The deluxe edition consisted of 35 special copies printed on French Rives Paper (out of a total of 500 copies printed) with an original frontispiece etching -"Clown" - , signed by Gordon Cook ** French for: "the bastard" ***Fernand Léger [1881-1955] was a French artist and filmmaker. His book "Cirque", published in 1950 contained 63 original lithographs. Bruno Adriani [1881-1971] was a German-American jurist, art historian and patron. In 1941 he and his family settled in Carmel-by-the-Sea in California, not far from Miller. They were on friendly terms and corresponded for many years. Adriani's personal art collection included a Van Gogh and a Monet. A very nice letter. As always, Miller finds himself short of funds & blaming a publisher. He not so subtly tries to elicit money from an admirer. PLEASE NOTE: this will be shipped from the EU by DHL at no cost to the buyer. N° de ref. de la librería 15012
