English politician and wit (1691-1762). Some minor staining but in very good condition overall. Dimensions approximately 2 1/2 inches by 7 1/2. Signed 'Geo: Dodington' beneath, in another hand, 'Recd. 26 March 1747 the full Contents of this ordre.' On the reverse of a slip cut from a printed order, corrected in manuscript, reading 'That you deliver and pay of such His Majesty's Treasure as remains in your Charge, arising by Virtue of the said Act, unto the Right Honourable George Dodington, Esq; or his Assigns, the Sum of Fifty Pounds, in Repayment of the like Sum by him lent upon Credit of the said Act, and paid into '. Descripción On 23.5 x 12cm. piece of paper. On aged and worn paper, with loss in from one edge towards head, but with good bold signature and surrounding writing unaffected. On the reverse of the document Poulett has written: '9. May 1761 | Recvd | Poulett'. Beside this is part of the signature of the witness, 'ary Creed'. Descripción An interesting autograph in economic history. Newland s entry in the Oxford DNB states that His signature on Bank of England notes became so familiar that they were known as Abraham Newlands. His fame in this respect was commemorated in several popular jingles . A good firm signature, A Newland , with that of the witness R Ettie , at the foot of printed form, completed in manuscript, paying Newland £33 15s 0d as assignee to an executor. On aged paper, with the part of the document bearing the signatures in good condition, but the upper portion damaged and worn, with perhaps a quarter of it worn away around the left-hand margin.
