Descripción

This West Virginia politician was an exceptional attorney who argued an incredible 140 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, among them the famed Youngstown Steel case (he won) and the Briggs v. Elliott "separate but equal" case (he lost); he served in Congress (1911-13) before being appointed the 14th U.S. Solicitor General (1913-18) and U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1918-21); in 1924 he was the Democratic presidential candidate, losing to incumbent Calvin Coolidge. AQS, 1p, 8" X 10", New York, NY, n.y. [ca. 1934]. Near fine. On "15 Broad Street / New York" red imprinted letterhead, he boldly pens in black ink near the top: "In the search for the Fortunate Isles / we do not need to throw away the / heritage we had on setting out. / John W. Davis." This is the address of the New York City Bar Association, which he served as president from 1931 to 1933, thereby approximately dating this item. While the context of this quotation is unclear, it's found referenced in 1934 and presumably has to do with some well-known utterance of his from the period -- he was named in the bizarre "Business Plot" in which business leaders were supposedly plotting to overthrow President Roosevelt, he was defending J.P. Morgan Jr. in a Senate investigation into the causes of the Great Depression, etc. Intriguing, attractive and unusual, in any case. N° de ref. de la librería 40873
