Journalist (1848-1870), killed 1870 in duel by Prince Pierre Buonaparte. The note is one page, 12mo, as follows: "La Gazette de Java, se recommande a l'Avenir Nationale / Victor Noir". The conjoint leaf has the following information, possibly in the same hand but more formal: "La Gazette de Java / Redige en Javanais, formar [?] Paris-Magazine, . samedi 28 Mars, imprime sur papier de luxe - / . . . [series of names including Victor Noir], etc, etc. / Le Numero cinquante Centimes -". Victor Noir iwas the editor of this short-lived (no pun intended) publication. Pasquier was a moderate reformer and was imprisoned during the Terror. Napoleon made him Prefect of Police, 1810-1814. He held office under Louis XVIII but could not work with the extreme royalists, and found his niche as President of the Chamber of Peers for the whole of Louis Philippe's reign. French chemist and politician Alfred Naquet (1834-1916) penned this brief note in French that reads: This includes the autograph of Girardin I shake your hand A. Naquet . Alfred Naquet worked as a chemistry professor and later was a member of the French National Assembly. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of France where he leaned strongly to the Left. He is best known for his push for the re-establishment of divorce. Written in purple ink on a 6 ¼ x 4 piece of stationery that has been glued onto a thick, larger album page which measures: 6 5/8 x 5 1/8 . From the celebrated autograph collection of Richard Monckton Milnes (Lord Houghton), and neatly mounted on a leaf extracted from an album. He writes that a few days previously he wrote to ask 'Monsieur le ministre de la marine' for 'une audience de q[uel]ques instants'. Ephemera. Near Fine. Manuscript on lined paper, bound by a single post at the top corner; 200x255mm; pp. 32, cursive handwriting in purple ink, on the recto only. It begins, "In the course of an erratic & wandering life I have mostly for the purpose of obtaining first hand knowledge of the seamy & more sensational -- of cosmopolitan life been forced to keep queer company in many Continental cities." This cataloguer wonders if this item remained unpublished, or if it's an early draft of "Society Intrigues I Have Known." It may have been published by Odhams in 1920, as a short story." See Image.
