Agreeing to the Society's request for 'an authoritative paper on the subject of trade with the Netherlands East Indies', and asking for the proposed date ('approximately'), as he will be 'in Holland in the latter part of October, when I shall be in a position to get all the latest and most reliable information obtainable upon this interesting and very important subject'. TWO: TLS. 30 September 1921. 1p., 4to. Putting forward four 'gentlemen' as possible chairmen of the meeting: Lord Emmott; F. Leverton Harris; R. de marees van Sinderen ('Netherlands Minister'); J. Crommelin ('Liberian Minister'). THREE: AN in the third person. Undated (stamp dated 1 March 1920). 1p., 12mo. He 'much regrets that owing to a previous business engagement he will not be able to avail himself of the kind invitation of the Council to attend the Lecture to be given by Mr. William James Garnett on Wednesday afternoon'. Descripción In Wyatt-Paine's obituary The Times (13 April 1935) described him as 'probably one of the most learned lawyers who ever held the office of stipendiary magistrate'. The letter concerns the Swiney Prize, regarding which Wyatt-Paine has 'perused a notice [.] which states that the prospective award in January 1914 will be made for a treatise on "General Jurisprudence"'. He would like to submit 'a Commentary on the Law of Bailments' which he wrote '[s]ome time since', and would like to know whether 'a work dealing onlhy with one branch of the law is eligible' TWO: 22 August 1913. 2pp., 12mo. He is writing to inform Wood that 'a relative of mine has written a paper on a subject of importance regarding the connection of fat [containing glycerin] with manufacture of explosives in Germany - and showing how that Country is approaching a crisis - when her supply of fat will be approaching exhaustion'. He cannot remember the exact title, but was impressed with the importance of the paper 'at the present time - and suggested that it might be read before your Society if it would prove acceptable'. He asks whether Wood might agree to it being forwarded to him 'for approval of the course I suggest'. Ends: 'I think that there is need of arriving at some uniform standard of difficulty and of arrangement of the papers set.' Letter Two (4to, 4 pp, good, with top left-hand corner of first leaf torn away, though not affecting text): A long defence of an examination paper set by him against the criticisms of 'Mr Frank J. Allen', who has sat it. 'Mr. Allen, to me it seems as if he does not know his own language, he writes Castilian with two lls. when in English is written with one l only. [.] I decline to answer the P.S. of Mr Allen letter, if I did I might hurt or annoy him. | In conclusion: Mr Allen forgets that he is a candidate and has no right to put remarks to his examiner, who with his twenty years experience ought to know how to conduct an examination of this kind.'.
