The namesake grandson of the Continental Navy officer was likewise a commodore, active first in the Mexican War; in February 1862 he commanded a joint Army-Navy operation up the York and Pamunkey Rivers in Virginia, destroying 27 Confederate ships and coming within 11 miles of Richmond; in latter years he commanded the Philadelphia Naval Yard, the same post his grandfather had held. Choice brief ALS, 2pp, 5" X 8", n.p., 1876 July 14. Near fine. Addressed to George H. Preble (1816-85), Union naval commander of the sloop "Oneida" censured in September 1862 for allowing the Confederate cruiser "Florida" to break the blockade of Mobile. Near fine. Friendly note to a colleague, reading in part: "'Old Commodore Murray's' letter book, does not treat of the Navy Yard, but relates to two cruises: 'Insurgante' and 'Constitution' 1799 to 1802." Murray can't resist commenting on Preble's controversial censuring: "The Department does not admit that you are the victim of Politicians, & will not let you be a martyr = but, some of us round here, think you are." And finally, worry about job security: "I don't [know] any thing yet to alarm us about reduction & c, of the Navy." Bold and attractive. Short but potent. N° de ref. de la librería 22279
