Descripción Art Therapy Publications, Craftsbury Common, Vermont, 1983. Trade Paperback. Estado de conservación: Near Fine. Revised Edition. 370 Pages. This is a 1983 Revised Edition of the 1951 First Edition. Tight book with flawless interior text and illustration pages. The first steps of the novice are to take up pencil or brush to draw or paint. Before approaching the problems which arise in this field of expression, we should understand what takes place within the young artist and what means there are by which we may accelerate his power. Nature and art have this in common-a form comes into existence by the union of two opposites. In nature, male and female create a new life. In art, two opposite states of being within the artist are needed to create form. The active and receptive states must alternate to produce and complete a work. The common opinion prevails that only constant effort and activity are required. This is a false notion, the cause of many failures. Take, for example, two boys, each meeting obstacles in his work, but each using a different method to overcome them. The first boy comes into the studio and goes directly to work. He draws for an hour, but is not satisfied. He tries again and again, only to conclude that he cannot rescue the picture. In disgust, he crumples it up and throws it away. The explanation is simple. The boy was frustrated and tried to push himself past failure by continual activity. He fought against the natural tide in the creative process. He needed rest and reflection to find the next step, but he did not know enough to satisfy that need. Take a different case. A boy starts with an idea or an image in his mind of something he wants to paint. He picks up his sketchbook, then sits in the corner of the room quietly dreaming about the idea and letting it take shape. He makes several sketches to clarify the plan. At last he gets up, goes to the easel, and begins his picture. He may work for a long time, but he too comes to difficulties that he cannot overcome. He struggles for a while. Then, instead of forcing the issue, the boy, like a true artist, takes care of himself. He throws himself on a couch (which is there for this very purpose) and broods about the picture, letting it speak to him. During this time he may close his eyes and place his hands over them. As the darkness and quiet increase, the original images become clarified, or new ones come surging up to enrich the first plan. The answer to the boy's problem may arise from his unconscious mind; from the sum of his past experiences, or from some outside source of wisdom. The important thing is that the solution frequently appears. The darkness, the quiet, the withdrawal, all help the boy to find the next step. Released, he can then return to work. The idea of consciously-rhythmically-alternating the process of giving out and taking in is so simple that it seems obvious, but few people make use of it. The tendency is to work to that point of fatigue at which nothing fresh can be contributed. If the student learns to proceed in rhythm, he will find a new energy, a fresh productivity; he will, in short, be following the law of his nature.
