First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14.5cm, 254pp. Signed, dedicated and dated directly to the title page by Douglas Hurd. A study of Britain's war with China in the late 1850s. Often thought as of a prime example of gunboat diplomacy and Imperialist bullying, Douglas Hurd reveals that there was more to this war over trading rights. In Britain, everyone held the view that the country had a right to trade freely with China and to be acknowledged as her equal. On one side, Palmerston thought the rights should be won by force, whilst the Tories thought success would come through treating the Chinese generously. Condition: The book is in very good good condition, the dustwrapper suffers from some light creasing. It has been price-clipped but is now within a protective sleeve. N° de ref. de la librería 006087
