Descripción:

An attractive binding by Harrap in dark blue cloth, gilt titles on spine, slightly larger than other Churchill titles of this era at 6 x 9 inches, top edges stained blue. Only one printing of 5000 copies, no reprints other than US edition. 466 pages, frontis portrait. An important collection of Churchill?s speeches during the period 1928-1938 which warn all too clearly of the coming war. The final paragraph of the last speech sums it up ?Now the victors are the vanquished.? Unfortunately there are no modern reprints, so firsts are in constant demand. Book is clean, tight, page edges even and free of spots, spine slightly lighter than covers. Top page edges a good unfaded blue. No names, contents very clean. Dustwrapper is unclipped, very bright, some edge wear with losses along spine ends, which are reinforced behind with old tape. (ICS A44a). N° de ref. de la librería

Descripción London, George G. Harrap and Co., 1938, 1938. First Edition. Apparently only 5000 copies were ever published. Some neat pencil notes ( not many ) by Brigadier-General P.R.C. Groves, including margin lines, especially on the last page, with the concluding quote by Churchill, prescient as ever. Groves does not sign his name in the book however. Textblock is clean and binding tight. Rear endpaper and half title leaves have browning and the boards have light stains. Spine is slightly sunned though gilt is still bright. The last page with the key quote has a neat fold, as does another page that is key for the owner. P. R. C. Groves (1878-1959) was perhaps the most well-known proponent of the idea of the 'knock-out blow'. He held some very responsible positions during the war, in particular Director of Flying Operations, while after the war he was the British Air Representative to the Versailles peace conference. It's not clear to me why he retired so early at age 44; but as he was soon afterwards publicly criticising Trenchard and the Air Ministry, particularly over the possible aerial threat from France and the lack of support for the aircraft industry, perhaps he felt that change could not be effected from within. In September 1939 he was recalled to the Air Ministry, where he served as Deputy-Director of Intelligence until April 1940. His works on airpower include Our Future in the Air (1922), Behind the Smoke Screen (1934) and Our Future in the Air (1935; unrelated to the earlier book with the same name). Hardback. No dj. Descripción George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd, London, 1938. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very good minus. First Edition, only printing. This is the precursor to Churchill's great war speeches, the British first edition. The book contains a collection of speeches spanning the years 1928 to 1938 criticizing British foreign policy and warning prophetically of the coming danger. The world remembers the resolute war leader to whom the British turned, but it is easy to forget the years leading up to the war which Churchill spent persistent, eloquent, and largely unheeded. Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods called this edition "probably the most crucial volume of speeches that he ever published". As further testimony to the book's importance, a copy of the U.S. edition lay on "President Roosevelt's bedside table, with key passages, including an analysis of the president's peace initiative, underscored." (William Manchester's The Last Lion, Volume II, p.305). Only 5,000 copies of this first and only British impression were printed. Here is an about very good copy. The blue coth binding is square and tight with sharp corners and very little wear. Though the spine gilt remains clearly legible, the spine is sunned, as is typical for this edition, with sunning also to a .5 inch strip at the top edge of the rear cover and a faint, roughly 1 inch diameter discoloration on the lower front cover. The contents remain crisp with no spotting. A single previous owner name is inked on the ffep and ghosted onto the half-title, which has picked up the usual transfer browning from the pastedown. The blue stained top edge is dulled and a little soiled. The fore and bottom edges are age-toned. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A107.1. Woods/ICS A44(a), Langworth p.191. Descripción George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., London, 1938. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very good. 1st Edition. This is the precursor to Churchill's great war speeches. A collection of speeches spanning the years 1928 to 1938 criticizing British foreign policy and warning prophetically of the coming danger. Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods called this book "probably the most crucial volume of speeches that he ever published." There was a single printing of the first edition, of only 5,000 copies. Offered here is a very good copy, structurally sound with some minor cosmetic compromises. The blue binding is clean, tight, and square with sharp corners and only trivial hints of shelf wear. The spine is faded as usual, but the gilt remains bright and legible. The rear cover shows some irregular sunning along the hinge. The contents are crisp, clean, and tight with absolutely no spotting. Nonetheless, the contents do show age-toning. The blue-stained top edge is faded and there is an ink stamped previous owner name on the rear endpaper. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A107.1. Woods/ICS A44(a), Langworth p.191.
