Acerca de

Book by Ockenga, Starr, Doolittle, Eileen

From School Library Journal:

K Up This alphabet book uses a series of full-color photographs, each of which is a composite of small collectible items, some easily identified and others quite obscure, which begin with the given letter. The objects rest on painted backgrounds. The pictures are introduced by a verse which loosely tells the story of a young girl, alone and bored, rooting through the objects in an attic. It is difficult to tell just who this book is for. While some adults might be charmed by the handsome photographs and the ``open-ended puzzlement game'' of figuring out what the objects representing each letter are, the verse, printed in large letters and with no literary distinction, keeps this from being a book for adults. As an alphabet book for young children, however, the book is even less satisfactory. There is no clear and easily identified relation between the letter and the illustration. While young children could probably identify one or two of the items in the photographs, the photos' complexity and the large number of items in each will confuse or distract children. Older children, too, would find many of the antique items in the photographs impossible to identify even though they might have the patience to spend time studying them. (A key at the end does identify all of the objects.) This handsome book would be better repackaged as an adult ``coffee table'' book. Constance A. Mellon, Department of Library & Information Studies, East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C.
