Acerca de

Aristoxenus was born in the 4th cent. B.C., and was a pupil of Aristotle. He marks a turning point in Greek musical theory by being the first to base theory on analysis of musical practice. In his two extant treatises, Elements of Rhythm and Elements of Harmony, he systematized Greek music by clear definitions of terms and orderly arrangement of scales. "The main object of this book is to introduce, to such English readers as may be curious in the matter of music, the writings of the foremost musical theorist of Ancient Greece, and with this object in view I have endeavoured to supply a sound text and a clear translation of his great work, and to illustraste its more obscure passages by citations from other exponents of the same science.-From the preface. The author also draws distinctions between his work and that of Marquard and Westphall, and correcting what he perceives to be errors in the Selden MS. A difficult work to find in any edition
