First Printing. Publisher's full red cloth, gilt lettering on spine, gilt medallion on cover. Profusely illustrated with 192 pages of glossy black & white plates, and 57 in-text drawings and plans. Includes bibliography and index. Henry-Russell Hitchcock (1903-1987) was a leading American architectural historian of his generation. A long-time professor at Smith College and New York University, he is best known for writings that helped to define Modern architecture. Over the course of Hitchock's career, he produced more than a dozen books on architecture. His "Architecture: Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries" (1958) is an exhaustive study of more than 150 years of architecture that was widely used as a textbook in architectural history courses from the 1960s to the 1980s, and is still a useful reference today. The scope of this volume is international; it covers not only the countries of Europe but also North and South America and Australia, and considers the work of the most influential architects and movements. [It is] an attempt to bring out in each of the successive aspects of architectural production since 1800 its own intrinsic merits. In particular the chapters on commercial architecture and on the nineteenth-century Anglo-American house represent the first serious attempts to tell these notable stories consecutively. Unmarked, tight, and square. The dust jacket, is UNCLIPPED but does have considerable edge chipping and short edge tears. The Pelican History of Art Series in 498 pages of intense insight. Enough said of offerings which speak loudly for themselves. Acquire, enjoy, and share what the self-actualized author has discovered in his extensive intellectual travels to prepare this very informative writing for public edification. Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a permanent character lacking in transitory electronic renderings. As always, more photos and/or info will be sent on request. Indeed, these hallowed pages are stoic, self-reliant, certain, sure and competent in their worthiness. Repeat, The Pelican History of Art Series in 498 pages of intense insight. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. N° de ref. de la librería 011106
