Descripción

Disbound (text block only); 8vo (240x140mm); pp. viii, 190, [2]. A little light foxing here and there, some very light wear along the edges (not affecting text); overall nice and clean, an excellent candidate for binding. Previous owner's bookplate in bottom margin of title-page. Contemporary ownership signature of W. Frays along top edge of FFEP, and possibly inscribed (??) to him by the author (difficult to say, as signature has been trimmed along the fore-edge), along the top edge of the title-page: "W. Frays, presented by his friend D. D. Morse." Hannah Adams (1755-1831) was part of a loose-knit circle of influential, intellectual Bostonians, published on history and religion. Her "Summary History of New England" caused something of a scandal as she squared off with the Rev. Jedidiah Morse, an orthodox Calvinist, over publication rights for their competing history textbooks. The episode eventually ruined Morse's reputation, as Hannah Adams's coterie of liberal Bostonians rallied to her defense. N° de ref. de la librería JC12539
