First edition of an important collection of lectures by the German evolutionary biologist Ernst Haeckel, who was professor of comparative anatomy at the University of Jena for 47 years (1862-1909). 'Haeckel was the filter through whom the Germans understood Darwin. He was largely responsible for the transformation of Darwinism in Germany into a Social Darwinism that was closely tied to ideas of racial hierarchy' (Robert Bernasconi, Race and Anthropology, Thoemmes Press, 2003). It was later published in English as The Evolution of Man: a Popular Exposition of the Principal Points of Human Ontogeny and Phylogeny (1903). Haeckel was a talented scientific illustrator, and the plates in this book were all drawn by him. Particularly notable are his depiction of the Tree of Man (XII), and the controversial embryological drawings (IV and V) which unduly emphasise similarities across species, and were said at the time (for example by Wilhelm His) to be fraudulent. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Large 8vo, xvi, [ii], 732 pp., 12 plates, 210 line drawings and 36 tables within the text, contemporary half leather, boards considerably rubbed, early ink inscription on title-page, some light browning and spotting, a few marginal annotations in pencil.
