The author spent happy years doing the historical research of a woman who was an English tutor to the Siamese King's children and favorite concubines in the 1860s when Siam's (modern day Thailand) traditional culture and monarchy were being exposed to many new and challenging ideas from the West. The tutor, Anna Lenowens, wrote extensively of her experiences in letters, diaries, and records and the author immersed herself in several archives to understand this exciting story of harems, palace life, and all the various comedies and cruelties they held. This story is told in 360 toned, unmarked pages. Well-written, historically accurate, enlightening, and entertaining. Many charming illustrations throughout. The brick colored cloth boards are part of a tight binding, with lettering on the spine. Very slight shelf wear. The dust jacket is in good-plus condition, with a few closed tears, but with bright color.A bit of a bleahing to a silver dollar sized patch at bottom left of front cover and a tidal mark on inside of jacket. Photos of the author and Anna Lenowens on the rear, with author's explanation of her interest in the topic and her research. A story of the king's wives and slaves, who struggle for freedom, assisted by Anna. Hirschfeld Galleries' offerings such as this one which take on a life of their own and speak so very loudly for themselves. Read to learn and enjoy; go forth to share and enjoin. Research, analysis, dissertation, lucubrations or just enjoyment, this is the one. ACTUAL BOOK FOR SALE PICTURED.
