Descripción

This 216-page, believed-to-be First Edition offering in VG+/G+ condition is Ann Bartlett Returns To the Philippines: The Further Adventures of a Navy Nurse by Martha Johnson, published by Thomas Y. Crowell Company in 1945. (The price on the front dust jacket flap is $2.50) Not an ex-library copy, this book, at age 66, is still in quite crisp/sound physical shape, but does show some yellowing of end papers front and back, as well as pages of text. The dust jacket, still in pretty good shape for its years, does evidence some noticeable shelf wear, most notably at top and bottom edges of jacket's spine, and there is a small, repairable tear at top edge of jacket's front cover section. From front inside jacket flap, "Ann Bartlett was a girl of courage. She was not content to have a comfortable job in a naval hospital but applied for a position on the Sea Haven, a large hospital ship which was sent out to the Southwest Pacific where the fighting was heavy. She was glad to be in that area, for it was there that her fiance, Bruce Mitchell, was flying a plane for the navy. By an accident Ann was put aboard a small lifeboat which lost contact with the Sea Haven. When the party in the small boat reached land once more, her troubles really started. But this brave American girl answered in full all the demands of her profession and did her work well among the guerrillas with whom she found herself. This is a story of bravery and courage in the face of tremendous difficulties. It is the fourth in a series which has become popular among thousands of American girls who see in Ann Bartlett the selflessness and adherence to duty that is typical of the Navy Nurse Corps." Indeed, Martha Johnson certainly did her part for the war effort, whether that was her intention or not. . This is an excellent period piece/ window into what our young girls(aged 12-18) were offered to read and ingest, with our nation on a robust, final push to victory in Europe and in the Pacific theater. NOTE: There is, also, on the back jacket cover, an entreaty titled "It's Your War, Too: They Give Their Lives. You Lend Your Money." It is, of course, a plea from the U.S. government to Ann Bartlett's legions of faithful readers to sell as many War Bonds and Stamps as possible, whenever their high schools hold a Bond Rally, to help offset the enormous cost of waging war. This offering, in a very real way, is a collector's item, as well as an enticing story that still just might be capable of positive inspiration for a young reader you may personally know. (Though any young reader ought to be made aware that it's a very rare item, particularly with a dust jacket in as nice of shape as this one is. . . . not perfect but really quite nice for its age.) Thank you!!. N° de ref. de la librería 004687
