Animal Babies by Margaret Jean Bauer, Illustrated by Jacob Bates Abbott, was published by M. A. Donohue & Company in 1949. Not an ex-library copy, this 10" X 12", 88-page, 64-year-old, believed-to-be First Edition offering is in VG condition. In overall firm/sound physical shape, there is some modest shelf wear, primarily at the four outer tips of front/back cover boards, and some equally modest yellowing of end papers and text's pages. From Foreword, "Margaret Jean Bauer, as[at that time] secretary to a corps of naturalist-scholars at the Chicago Natural History Museum, comes properly to the writing of a book for human children about the children of their animal friends. The Museum's vast and ever-growing store of knowledge tends to be locked up in collections, in technical books, and in its libraries. The exhibition floors and the guide lecturers are one of the means of unlocking this treasure. Equally essential are the writers and illustrators who will take the trouble to make the Museum's knowledge understandable to children. This is, in fact, one of the fields of usefulness of the Museum staff. It always seems fortunate when the staff members themselves can set aside their technical jargon and long scientific names and write for the general public, and above all for the general public of the future." This over-sized, wonderfully illustrated volume is presented in some 11 chapters, with titles such as "Water Babies", "Tree Babies", "Ground Babies", "Babies Under the Ground", "Desert Babies", "Zoo Babies", "Queer Babies"(such as the duckbill platypus, spiny anteater, and three-toed tree sloth), and "Orphan Babies". Just some of the animal babies highlighted include raccoons, Polar bears, chipmunks, camels, tigers, deer, elephants, koalas, and, along with countless others, cats and rabbits. OF SPECIAL NOTE: There are 12 full page, absolutely beautifully drawn Illustrations throughout, in rich, vivid color, executed by Jacob Abbott, which so bring to life, in their natural habitats, a dozen of the animals described (not to mention dozens more smaller black and white sketches mostly frequenting the various outer margins of this offering). Said captivating pictures, combined with the author's clear, informative words, make this book a joy to experience for animal lovers young and old! Thank you!!. N° de ref. del artículo 006764
