Título: Andrew Jackson.
New York: Ritchie & Co., n.y. [ca. 1860]. Mezzotint. Folio (21" X 29"), framed under a single tan matte in a contemporary 1¼" simple dark wood frame (overall dimensions 30" X 39"). Print is near fine -- bright and clean, delicately colored in subdued shades. 1970s vintage framing, plain but serviceable, slight signs of wear and a touch of faint soiling to the matte. Jackson is pictured standing full-length in three-piece suit gazing to the viewer's right, a chair behind him, right hand resting on a table laden with books, documents, quill pen and inkstand. Little is known about artist D.M. Carter (1827-81), on whose painting this mezzotint is based, but Scottish-born Alexander Hay Ritchie (1822-95), whose name appears in the plate as engraver, was a well-known New York artist and engraver whose firm specialized in mezzotints. From the collection of ADLAI E. STEVENSON III (b. 1930), former U.S. Senator from Illinois, in whose Senate office it once hung. (Son of two-term Illinois governor and two-time presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II and great-grandson of Grover Cleveland's vice president Adlai E. Stevenson I.).
