Descripción George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 40 Museum Street W.C.1, London, 1945. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. ***The author's second book of poems. ***Black and white frontispiece photograph of Alun Lewis. ***Six-page foreword by Robert Graves. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with white titles to spine. No inscriptions. Spine tight. ***In a very good black and red printed dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing original publisher's price of 5s. net. Edges of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and creased. Four tiny closed tears to top edge of front panel of dustwrapper. Three short closed tears to bottom edge of front panel of dustwrapper. Couple of very tiny tears to top edge of rear panel of dustwrapper. Short closed tear to base of spine of dustwrapper. Small chip to head of spine of dustwrapper. Very small chip to tail of spine of dustwrapper. Tiny loss to top corners of dustwrapper. Red titles to front panel of dustwrapper bright. Front and rear dustwrapper slightly rubbed and discoloured (being cream background). ***75 pages. 190 mm x 130 mm. ***'In these, the last fruits of Alun Lewis' poetry, the personal and generous feeling of "Raiders' Dawn" had deepened and at the same time grown more objective and aware of what is happening. The poems are a record of experience in England, at sea, and in India, and an attempt to control and clarify the swift succession of events that so often overwhelm the individual soldier. ***The influences of other poets have diminished: the only influence now apparent is that of life, and of the larger, anonymous tradition of English poetry that owns no school and seeks a virtue deeper than that of modernism. The author said he had taken his title and his text from the Book of Job, Chapter 39, and asked his readers to consider that chapter as his foreword and his postscript. ***The close relationship between the poems and his actual life was evident in the stories in "The Last Inspection", whose realism and observation authenticated the poetry of "Raiders' Dawn". ***In his last letter to his publishers, Alun Lewis wrote of these poems that they should be read as the musical score of a life that will again express itself in prose when the din of war and preparation for war had died down, and there was time again to write and re-write'. [Quote from inside front dustwrapper blurb] ***The first impression of the first edition of the second poetry book written by the Welsh poet and author who served as a soldier during the Second World War and who died in 1944, published at the end of the Second World War, printed on thin economy-standard wartime paper, complete in its original fragile dustwrapper. A small slim book. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Nº de ref. de la librería 2690
