Descripción
Schoolcraft was a noted explorer of Great Lakes region and discovered the source of the Mississippi. He was an Indian agent for several years in the Lake Superior region of Michigan and a keen, sympathetic student of the life and culture of native Americans. First issued as "Oneota, Or Characteristics of the Red Race in America" in 1845, this is a later (and revised) printing of Schoolcraft's work which went through several editions and five title changes over a ten year period--"issuing a book under 5 different titles within 10 years is an unparalleled protean feat--even for Schoolcraft"--Howes. The book includes his personal reminiscences and was one of his most popular books on the life, manners and customs of a race whose way of life he knew was vanishing. Illustrated with four plates (including a frontis illustration of a Mandan Chief) and several text cuts. Rebound in modern cloth with gilt spine lettering making this an entirely serviceable and attractive copy. There is an appendix "containing thrilling narratives, daring exploits, etc., etc." which are captivity narratives: "Alexander Henry's Captivity," "Francis Noble's Captivity," "Quintin Stockwell's Captivity," "Captivity of Peter Williamson," and "Mrs. Smith's Captivity." There are no owner names or library markings in this book. There is occasional scattered foxing to some pages (especially toward the front and rear of the book), but most pages are clean. Ref: Howes S 188, Sabin 77837, Field see 1373 ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 495 pages. N° de ref. del artículo 7011
