From the Preface to the First Edition: "My heart was with the South because I came on my mother's side of a West Indian family - and a slave-owning family - ruined by the Abolition of Slavery in the British Colonies; and although I know perfectly well that I was altogether wrong in what I wrote politically concerning 'America in the Midst of War,' my heart is still in the South." Account of Sala's second visit, which he began on Nov. 23, 1879. Charles Dickens published some of his early articles and stories in Household Words; by 1857 Sala became a contributor to the Daily Telegraph. He was a colorful character in word and deed. The reader will journey with him to New York, Richmond, Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago (and Stockyards), San Francisco, Salt Lake City (and Mormons), and other places. ; About 400 engravings; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 548 pages.
