Downtown street map on page 5; b/w photographs; illustrations; Index. Reviews the history of San Antonio's riverfront and examines the efforts of the WPA to re-vitalize the downtown area with projects such as the Riverwalk and historic preservation of the Alamo and the city's Old Villita or Old Quarter. Bibliographical references: Bienes Catalogue 239; September 1941 WPA Writers' Program Publications catalogue - page 44. A very good copy. The San Antonio unit of the Texas Writers' Program was particularly prolific for they published a total of six city-related books with the other five being OLD VILLITA (1939), RANDOLPH FIELD; A HISTORY AND GUIDE (1942), SAN ANTONIO, CITY OF MISSIONS (1942) and SAN ANTONIO AN AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO THE CITY AND ITS ENVIRONS (1938) which was revised and re-issued as SAN ANTONIO; A HISTORY AND GUIDE (1941). All of the San Antonio WPA books are hard-to-find with ALONG THE SAN ANTONIO RIVER and the oversized OLD VILLITA being the most difficult to acquire. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller.
