Stated 1st Edition and 1st Printing. 1990 Brooklyn Museum Edition; Book issued in connection with the 1990 Bierstadt exhibition at Brooklyn Museum, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, San Francisco and National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. Copy is in excellent, surprisingly well-preserved condition and is immaculate and completely unmarked: no ugly remainder mark on book edge; no bookseller stamps or stickers; no x-library detritus; no owner signatures, gift inscriptions, notes, underlining or markings of any kind. Pictorial cover is immaculate, bright with no cuffing or scratches; cover lies flat and square with no curling. There is a corner crease at bottom of front cover and with a trace of rubbing at spine ends and corners. Spine is lightly creased, but straight and unbroken; binding is very tight. Bright, white pages are immaculate, fresh and crisp, with no sign of age toning. Book is lavishly illustrated with black and white photographs on virtually every page plus 57 full-colour plates. This magnificent book chronicles the 19th century landscape painting of Albert Bierstadt who was the first to convey the powerful visual impact and scale of the vast empty space and towering mountains that characterize the landscape of the American West. A chronology, three in-depth articles plus two appendices complete this volume.
