Descripción

White pictorial wrappers with Harrison Fisher cover. Tall quarto. 174pp. A rare issue of this early Hearst magazine containing the first appearance of Hemingway's short story which was later published in "Winner Take Nothing" (1933). A man gets into a vicious knife fight somewhere in the Keys and leaves his opponent for dead. A ship goes down in a storm and the man swims out to it to take a look. Through a porthole he sees a drowned woman wearing expensive jewelry. He tries vainly to break into the ship and ends up swimming back to shore where he finds that he did not kill his earlier opponent. The storm resumes and the man returns to the wreck to find that the Greeks have emptied the vessel of its valuables. The story is dramatically illustrated by Dan Content. Heminway's inspiration for this story may have been the tale of a Spanish liner's sinking off the Dry Tortugas told him by a Key West fishing guide. This issue also contains fiction by Pearl Buck, Fannie Hurst and others, and nice illustrations by James Montgomery Flagg, John Held, Jr., and others, as well as color ads for Campbell's Soup, Chevrolet, Camel Filters and other 30's products. A good to very good copy with some cover soiling, wear to the spine and some corner folding. There is a chip missing at the bottom of the spine. The pages are very good with some light foxing and corner wear. N° de ref. de la librería 4496
