Tan cloth. 12mo. 366pp. Later printing. Inscribed by Frank Squier, the author's brother, and with an original watercolor by him on the front cover and along the top of the contents page. An account of the author's travels along the eastern coast of present-day Nicaragua and Honduras. It was first published under a pseudonym in 1855. Ephraim George Squier (1821-1888) was a journalist, diplomat and archaelogist. He edited several publications in New York and became involved in Whig politics before moving to Ohio in 1844. While there he published a book on the Ohio Valley indian mounds. In 1849 he was appointed the United States Charge-d'affaires to Central America during a time of increased tension between Britian and the United States over interests there. During his two years there he pursued his archaeological research and negotiated a treaty between the U.S. and Nicaragua for the construction of an interoceanic canal. In 1868 Squier became the Consul General of Honduras in New York. Squier suffered mental problems after his divorce in 1873 and was declared legally insane, becoming the ward of his brother Frank, a Brooklyn-based artist of some repute. Frank also served as literary executor after his brother's death in 1888. The watercolor on the cover shows a coastal scene with a schooner along the shore and is initaled "F.S". In terms of condition this is a worn copy with some heavy soiling to the covers and some darkening and speckling to the spine. The text is good with some soiling and wear and some spotting to a few of the margins. A few pages are starting to come loose and one illustration is chipped at the edges. N° de ref. de la librería
