A first edition (with Scribner colophon and 'A' on copyright page) of Ernest Hemingway's novel, which is set in Trieste and Venice. This work followed his "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and is centered around themes of death and reflection. --- In full black cloth-covered boards with Hemingway facsimile signature gilt-stamped on front cover, faded gilt-stamped spine titling. Volume is housed in a FACSIMILE of the original dust jacket which is made to look like a chipped jacket with white Brodart lining showing through and with rubbing. --- With minor cover corner bumps and light cover soiling; previous owner's rubberstamping on half title, a crayon mark to title page, tear to pg. 5 and leaves have yellowed a little. Interior is otherwise clean and unmarked. Spine titling has faded significantly. Newish facsimile jacket in removable archival mylar protector.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 308 pages.
