Descripción 1899. (1846-1909, English shipbroker and botanist), thanking him "for the papers relating to the S. American Missions. I am sorry I cannot undertake the local secretary's work here . We might, however, arrange a meeting", 22 Avenue Gardens, Acton, W., 28th September The writer was a son of George Robert Waterhouse, 1810-1888, who had described for Darwin the mammals and coleoptera collected on the 'Beagle'. Charles' brother Frederick H. Waterhouse was Librarian of the Zoological Society. Middleton was employed at one time by the Hartlepools Shipowners' Society. About 1886 he and his wife settled in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, at the foot of the Cumberland Mountains. He corresponded with many leading naturalists, collected autographs, and presented a herbarium of some 3000 American and other specimens to McGill University in December 1890, when he made a trip to England, returning permanently to England in 1892. With his wife and sister he spent 1904-1907 as a missionary in Chile. Again returning, he took a house in Kew and was a Temporary Assistant at the Natural History Museum till 1909. Peter on Sunday, who has a pleasant memory of yr. visit", 2 sides 8vo., with original autograph envelope, 41 Boston Road, Brentford, 2nd June Britten studied medicine, was at Kew 1869-1871, and from 1871 worked in the Botanical department of the British Museum. He compiled with Robert Holland the valuable 'Dictionary of English Plant Names', 1878-1886, and with G.S. Boulger the 'Biographical Index of British and Irish Botanists', 1893, which had first appeared in the Journal of Botany. Middleton was employed at one time by the Hartlepools Shipowners' Society. About 1886 he and his wife settled in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, at the foot of the Cumberland Mountains. He was a member of the council of the Royal Society. His collection of fungi was left to the Kew Herbarium and the genus Curreya was founded in his memory. He translated Hofmeister's 'On the Germination of the Higher Cryptogamia', 1862, and was editor of the Natural History Review from 1861.
