Pictorial bookplate on each pastedown of Jonas Cohn, 1869 Görlitz - 1947 Birmingham, German emigré (1939) philosopher, psychologist and educationalist; his signature dated Oktober 1902 together with two-line inscription in German on flyleaf of Vol. I, and a page of his neatly handwritten notes titled 'Philosophisch Wesentliches aus Montaigne' on sheet laid down on rear pastedown of Vol. I. Small stamp of later owner in lower margin of each bookplate. Vol. V without flyleaves; 24 pages of publisher advertisements at rear, including fine full-page Jugendstil colour-illustrated announcement of works by John Ruskin followed by reviews from various journals, the latest of which dated 1901. Original green cloth gilt bindings, covers with blindstamped ruled borders. Effects of water splash on front cover of Vol. III resulting only in loss of sheen over largish patch and a number of spots. No dust jackets. Edges of text-blocks toned, contents lightly so.
