Maugham, W. Somerset. ASHENDEN. Or The British Agent. London: Heinemann, (1936). Film Tie-In Edition published eight years after the first edition, but in tandem with the release of Alfred Hitchcock's SECRET AGENT, a 1936 Gaumont British film featuring British spies operating behind the lines in war-torn Europe. A Fine copy in a Near Fine lightly-used dust jacket (one tiny chip, two folds just barely beginning to split). William Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965) was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s. The volume itself is from Heinemann's enormous 1934 "Collected Edition of the Works of W. Somerset Maugham" and this movie tie-in Dust Jacket featuring Madeleine Carroll, a gun, and a map of Switzerland was rather idiosyncratically added to Ashenden two years later. We've dealt in photoplay and film editions for twenty years, yet this is the first time we've encountered this exceedingly attractive Dust Jacket. SECRET AGENT, while not Hitchcock's best-known film, was seminal in helping establish Hitchcock's career as a maker of great espionage films. Secret Agent was proceeded by The 39 Steps (1935), and paved the way for Foreign Correspondent (1940), Saboteur (1942), Notorious (1946), North By Northwest (1959, Torn Curtain (1966), and Topaz (1969).
