AMERICA AND THE GREAT WAR FOR HUMANITY AND FREEDOM. Willis Fletcher Johnson. The Thomas Manufacturing Co., Dayton. 1917 First edition. 414pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is bound in green waxed linen covered boards with embossed titling and decoration to the upper board. The contents are bright white, tight, and square. Illustrated with over 100 plans, maps diagrams, drawings and reproductions of photographs. This book was published in the year that the United States declared war on the German Empire on April 6, 1917. The U.S. was an independent power and did not officially join the Allies. It closely cooperated with them militarily but acted alone in diplomacy. The U.S. made its major contributions in terms of supplies, raw material and money starting in 1917. American soldiers under General John J. Pershing arrived in large numbers on the Western Front in summer 1918. They played a major role until victory was achieved on November 11, 1918. Before entering the war, the US had remained neutral, though it had been an important supplier to Britain and other Allied powers. During the war, the US mobilized over 4,000,000 military personnel and suffered 110,000 deaths, including 43,000 due to the influenza pandemic. This copy is a publishing curiosity in that it has strict rules from the publisher to its representatives instructing them in the recommended way to sell this book such as "Keep the specimen in your own hands as much as possible, without appearing to be particular about it If the customer persists in getting it into his hands, let it go for a moment, then talk about something in it you want very much to show and get it back; now go right ahead with your description, turning the leaves and showing them in your own way. This keeps your sample clean from too much handling and compels him to see the attractive features you wish him to observe, and which he would never notice unless you pointed them out to him! Tipped in to the back are six lined pages for the salesman to write his orders in, not surprisingly these sheets are all empty! Ref KK5 Size: 414pp. N° de ref. de la librería 012268
